PIRGIM representatives say they have made progress in getting safer toys on the shelves, but hazardous toys continue to be sold. Sixteen kids died in 2004 due to toy-related injuries.
The four major dangers include:
-Toxic chemicals called phthalates in some plastic toys
-Small toys or parts becoming choking hazards
-String or cord toys presenting strangulation hazard
-Excessively loud toys causing hearing damage
Emergency room doctors say another danger is with anything a child can ride such as a bike, skateboard or scooter. Doctors say if you buy the bike you must buy and enforce wearing proper protective equipment including a helmet.
