2 Russian Runners Win Annual Detroit Marathon

DETROIT (AP) -- Two Russian runners have won the men's and women's races in the 35th Detroit Free Press/Talmer Bank Marathon in Detroit.

The Free Press reports that 43-year-old Viacheslav Shabunin finished in 2:25:26 for the men, while 41-year-old Liubov Denisova completed the 26.2-mile course in 2:46:33 for the women.

Each received $3,000.

Shabunin had a heel injury and finished second to Derek Nakluski of Kitchener, Ontario, in last year's marathon.

Race organizers expected more than 24,000 people to participate in Sunday's marathon, half-marathons, 5K run/walk and 5-person relay.

The marathon and international half-marathon routes took runners across the Ambassador Bridge into Windsor, Ontario, Canada and through the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel back into Detroit.

More than 20,000 people participated in last year's events. Two years ago, there were 19,749 participants.
