A long stretch of bitterly cold temperatures means Lansing firefighters are battling the elements in order to complete their mission.

Firefighters say everything from frozen pipes to inaccurate equipment can hinder their success in fighting a fire. Winter rules and procedures come into play when temperatures dip below 32 degrees.

At the scene of a fire, water can leak from the truck forming a slippery surface. This can slow down their response time in trying to put out a fire.

Firefighters say increased use of furnaces adds to the potential of fires. Consumers Energy says this January is the coldest since 1994.

The utility says average monthly bills in January have risen by about 30 dollars from last January. This January average bills cost about $129 compared to last January when bills cost $97.
