Capital Area United Way President and CEO, Bob Berning, is planning to resign, according to CAUW board president Tom Chirgwin.

"Bob indicated that he intends to submit his resignation at a special meeting of the Capital Area United Way board of directors that has been scheduled for Monday, Feb. 3," Chirgwin wrote in a statement released Monday.

Berning, who has worked for the United Way for 23 years, would not comment on the resignation, but some community leaders say his resignation will help restore trust in the organization, which has been plagued by an alleged embezzlement.

CAUW board members say they support Berning, and they emphasize Berning was not involved in the alleged embezzlement.

"From all we know about this case, there has been no wrongdoing by Bob or anyone else connected with Capital Area United Way, except Jacqulyn Allen-MacGregor," Chirgwin wrote.
