Lawmaker Apologizes for Blaming Bicyclists for Global Warming

A Washington state lawmaker has apologized for saying that bicyclists contribute to climate change with their heavy breathing.
Republican Rep. Ed Orcutt, of Kalama, is the ranking minority member of the state's House Transportation Committee. He apologized Monday for writing in an email last week that "the act of riding a bike results in greater emissions of carbon dioxide from the rider."
He was responding to bike store owner who was upset about a proposed fee on some new bicycle purchases. Orcutt is a fiscal conservative and believes cyclists should help pay for the upkeep of roads.
Orcutt says he was trying to say that bicyclists don't have a zero carbon footprint but that it was poorly worded.

That's funny, 'cause I always thought that a big cause of global warming was all of that hot air coming from Republican Representatives such as Ed Orcutt!

Name, I'm not disputing that global warming is occurring, however, please get your facts straight. 2012 may have been one of the hottest years on record for the U.S., however, the U.S.'s land area accounts for only 2% of the earth's total surface area. The year 2012 placed 10th hottest globally. I should also mention that official record keeping didn't start until 1880.

And you are a sad, sad person if you think that we're going to reverse global warming, which IS real but is NOT being caused by human effects... at least not significantly. I'm sure the dinosaurs were killed because they came out of hibernation at the wrong time because some guy in a diesel pickup was "rollin' coal". And I do, in fact, know quite a bit about funding for road maintenance. Want to know the percentage of it that is funded by bicycles?

Hey other Name, keep drinking the Kool Aid and ignore the facts. Last year was the hottest year on record. Every country in the world is psoting record temperatures. The ice caps are melting. Animals are dying from coming out of hibernation at the right time, but the weather is wrong. You are a sad, sad person if you can't believe what's happening in front of our eyes and instead take your opinions from political pundits on TV. They are not scientists.

Hey Wood, how do you know they do or don't pay for the roads. Your government spends money on many things unintended!?!?!? 51% of the uninformed

DS, the point isn't whether bikes "harm" the road or not. They USE the road and always want to DEMAND that they have the right to their half of it, so why shouldn't they pay for the use of that half?

in reply to "DS" a bike license is not so crazy, it used to be a law. In 1960 in Lansing I bought my first bike license from LPD. They stamp the bottom of my bike and then gave me a license plate that was mounted on the rear fender. I think the price was $1.00 and they (LPD) would even comes to the schools for registration. I even got my bike back after someone stole it because of that registration along with 30% of other bike owners acording to LPD. Maybe not so crazy huh?
