FDA Considers Over-the-Counter HIV Test

The test is called Orasure. It's a cheek swab test that is 99 percent effective and provides results within 20 minutes. Many people believe putting the tests on store shelves would result in more people knowing their HIV status and reduce the spread of the virus.

But opponents say counseling is required both before and after HIV testing and giving someone the ability to test at home, alone could result in confusion and shock if the result is positive.

The FDA has just started this discussion and no decisions are expected soon.
