Phone Rates Debated in Michigan Senate

The Michigan Senate has unanimously approved a bill giving residents the option of buying one calling plan with rates approved by regulators.

All other plans and services are deregulated under the bill that rewrites the state's telecommunications law.

The legislation limits the Michigan Public Service Commission's rate-setting authority to a basic plan that provides 100 outgoing calls a month, 12,000 outgoing minutes per month and unlimited incoming calls.

The bill now heads back to the state House.
