"These are all the people looking for shelter...people we place in motels," Kathy Faber, of the American Red Cross, said.
Seventy-five people got the shelter they so desperately needed Thursday. But Friday,,, was a different story.
"We have overspent our budget," Faber said. "We are out of money for sheltering people."
Faber said their $130,000 yearly shelter budget has dried up in just eight months.
"I feel its a crisis for our community," she said. "I've never seen it this bad."
There's been a 242 percent increase over the past year.
"Those increases are caused by economic factors such as foreclosures, loss of job you name it, we've seen it," Faber said.
The people who need help are not always who you think. We met one person at the Red Cross who goes to Lansing Community College, has a part time job, and she's homeless. Due to the lack of funding for shelter... she was turned away.
"They're saying we don't have a place for you to stay," Twenty-year-old Karissa said.
Karissa works as a waitress until midnight, but by then most shelters are closed.
"I've had people approach me that tried to molest me and stuff, it's not a safe environment," she said.
She was counting on getting a motel voucher Friday.
"I'm going to have to sleep in my car because I don't have a place to stay," Karissa said.
Faber said they've turned a lot of people away just like Karissa.
"There's limitations to everything and I know that," Faber said.
She just hopes there's no limit to the community's compassion.
