"We're approaching the point where we become ineffective when it comes to providing services in emergencies," Ingham County Sheriff Gene Wriggelsworth said.

That's what the Ingham County Sheriff said as he began his presentation to the board of commissioner's Law Enforcement Committee Thursday.

"We've gone through the meat and the fat, we're now cutting into the bone," he said.

The Sheriff's Department cut about a million dollars from their budget last year. This year, the board is asking for more than $900,000 in cuts.

"I'm saddened by the course of events last year," Commissioner Randy Schafer said. "They lost the paramedics units and the DARE officers."

But the board said they have no choice. They're facing a $4 million deficit for 2009.

"2010 is going to be worse than what we're facing now," Commissioner Debbie De Leon said. "There's no end in sight. I don't know where we're going to go. At what point do we say, we have to cut services?"

It's the townships that rely on those services, who are the most concerned.

"We use the sheriff's department," Randy Maiville said. "We rely on them solely for law enforcement."

Maiville is the Supervisor of Onondaga Township. He said even in tough economic times, it's the county's job to provide police protection.

"Safety is assigned to the Sheriff's Department and ultimately the county," Maiville said.

Commissioner Debbie De Leon said it might be time for the township's to step up.

"We would like to see some township's step up and help maintain some of the services they've been receiving," De Leon said. "Otherwise we won't have any choice but to cut road patrol."

Other departments will present their proposals to the board in the next few months.

mich just seems to be haveing one problem after another.while other states are doing much better.Indiana has a 9% sales tax, mich a 6% sales tax.but jobs are more, pay decent, and they have so much more to offer.gas prices are sometimes cheaper than mich.I don't get it.should not jenn be looking at states that are doing so much better and find out WHY.we are loosing services that are nessary,we have many on social programs and are on food cards.jobs have closed, left, keep laying off and this was happening before gas prices got so high.ingler started many problems and jenn has added to.and mich is is so many messes.why is government people allowed to stay in offices when they continue to mess up states or not help states?and why should they be paid for services not given.law makers are part of the system so we need not count on the right laws.what ever is NOT attractng jobs to mich needs changed.persons?places?or things like the wrong tax system.or government.take our pick.

It is a shame that they have to cut so many programs because of this deficit, but how did they get there in the first place? I'm not sure. But I feel like a lot of times there are new and innovative ways to run your business that might also be cheaper since they are more efficient. Maybe they should look into really taking a look at their officers and programs to make sure they are doing them as efficiently as possible, so they don't have to cut back on people and programs.

well now it is time for big lawyers to come forth and start sueing the state when programs get cut which cause people to suffer or die,due to lack of services.pass it onto local gov.of course, jenn gets more money for her foolish things.jobs are what is needed.to make tax money and support this state.but with a state like mich, all its lack of so many things, what bussiness owner would want to come here and bring his family?with the usa economy what bussiness owner could take a chance on mich.none in their right mind.make movies here, sure why not.cut police and many needed services.bigger the city the worse it gets.as crime rises.people can't even afford to buy homes.keep food in their homes for a week,or put much gas in their cars.and now we can't depend on enough police to help out.where will all being laid off get jobs?loss of their jobs will give less tax money.is not that a problem adding to a problem?sounds like mich.cut thy own throats.

I don't understand. If they are so tight on money and can't provide adequate emergency services, why were there were 4 Ingham County Sheriff's officers at a seat belt enforcement zone on Jolly yesterday? Couldn't they be used for emergency calls?? It sure doesn't give the appearance they are in a budget crunch.
