The Capital Area United Way, along with the 1,400 other United Way affiliated organizations in the United States, will soon be abiding by new financial reporting standards after United Way leaders from around the country voted Wednesday to increase accountability for the independent charities.

United Ways around the country will soon be required to submit their IRS 990 forms and their audit reports directly to the National United Way for third party review. Some say this method will catch financial flaws and wrongdoing before it's too late.

United Ways - which are independently run - will also be required to submit a self-assessment of their community work, and their code of ethics to the national organization in order to maintain membership as a United Way organization.
