"She was a wonderful person, she cared about our kids. She did many many things for our kids. Very connected with our staff and community."

CORRECTION: The memorial for Cindy Short at Everett High school will be Thursday, February 28th. We had previously stated Feb 25th. We apologize for the error.

For the Everett High School community, a few quiet seconds before a basketball game wasn't nearly enough to honor their beloved athletic director.

"It was that friend type of relationship," said Everett senior Chaquan Love.

Love was one of many students who was shocked to hear of Cindy Short's death after a weekend snowmobile accident.

"It didn't hit me until today when I walked into her office and she wasn't there," he said.

Short helped Love get his grades up to play sports, like she did with so many students during her time at Everett.

Principal Norman Gear says that's what made her so special.

"She was a wonderful person, she cared about our kids," he said. "She did many many things for our kids. Very connected with our staff and community."

The school has already come up with a way to memorialize Short through a scholarship in her name. The plan is in its early stages, but money collected from selling t-shirts and donations will help fund it.

"I was fortunate enough to get a job here because of Cindy," said Everett Varsity Basketball Head Coach Desmond Ferguson.

Ferguson, who provided the t-shirts, knew Short when he played basketball at Everett in the early 90s and was hired by her last year.

"She's been really supportive of the things I've done over the years and supportive of all the athletics throughout the high school," he said.

Lansing Superintendent Yvonne Caamal Canul, who was an assistant principal at Everett when Short was the girls' basketball coach, says the district will continue remembering her legacy.

"Cindy was a do-er and she'll want us to dust ourselves off and move forward," said Caamal Canul.

Visitation for Cindy Short will be held from 1 to 9 p.m., Sunday, at the Steuernol-McLaren Funeral Home in West Branch.
The funeral is 11 a.m., Monday.
Everett High School will have their own memorial service for Short on Thursday, February 28th at 7 p.m. in the school's gym.
