The Lansing City Council came up one vote short in an attempt to override Mayor Virg Bernero's veto of a specific spending proposal in the city budget. The council moved $44,000 from a surveillance camera fund into a city council staff fund. Council members said they needed the extra help. Mayor Bernero vetoed the proposal, saying all departments are running short on staff and the cameras are a necessity for public safety. The council needed 6 votes to override, but tonight's vote was 5-2. The city's budget is now finalized.

Council is lazy. Why do they need to hire more staff? I will say that I did feel safer the other day going to the downtown party store because of the cameras. And the one at saginaw and pine is a good idea too. I live by there and have seen countless drug deals. I can't speak for all the cameras, but these two are the closest to my house and I support them. So far, almost every decision virg has made has been the same one I would have... I guess I still support growth and revitalization. Of all spending, this is not frivilous like paying 100% of workers' health care (when no other company does so) or keeping the aweful Red Cedar golf course open.

Denny and Arch you are obviously professional brown nosers. Arch you obviously don't have a camera in YOUR neighborhood, or you wouldn't be kissing up to Virg. I feel bad that I even voted for him. You also must not realize that these cameras are privately funded for NOW but will soon cost the taxpayers $300,000/year per camera. that could have been several officers having a job.

$44,000 is that really going to help the council? Thank God it went to cameras.

Why don't the council members do what everyone else is doing? GET ANOTHER JOB YOU OVER-PAID PENCIL-PUSHERS! Go flip burgers. Maybe ten you'll actually be able to make a difference in the community instead of sitting around and 'playing' politics. Kudos, Mayor Bernero.
