"You trust people's hearts are in the right place when it comes to kids and education," says Springport Superintendent Randall Cook.

But educators and students in Springport are now learning that might not always be the case.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Department says Shelly Raquel Aday, known to friends as "Shelby," embezzled somewhere between $5,000 and $10,000 from the school's lunch program while working as a substitute secretary for the schools.

"You never want to believe something like this can happen," Cook says.

Both Cook and school liasion Deputy Tony McNeil say this was a total misuse of trust.

"People liked her," NcNeil says. "It's quite a shock to the school district."

And in a district like Springport, where declining enrollment means declining funds, they watch every dollar. So when dollars started disappearing, they had to act quickly.

"They installed a closed-circuit hidden video camera, and finally on April 25th they caught the suspect taking the money on video," McNeil says.

"Every dollar is critical," explains Cook.

Authorities say the amount Aaday took from the school is more than they get per pupil in state funding. But Cook says tighter accounting and criminal background checks should help prevent future financial foibles.

"We want people to know we're careful with the funds we're entrusted with," he says.

Especially now, with money tight everywhere.

Lyn, Lyn, Lyn, why are you protecting "Shelby" so much??? You act like you both are a couple. She had been caught on TAPE! So she is guilty, clase closed. Strap her in, pull the switch, and done with, if you want to hold her hand, be my guest.

She is a thief, and they have her on tape, pretty funny how many people are coming forward with missing funds. The courts need to make sure they give her the max. Michigan schools are already hurting and then to have an individual do this. It's sad.

I am agreeing with you denny they do have her on video and there is no excuse for that, esspecialy when they already expected someone was doing this. I'm just glad they finaly caught the person responsible for this. I hear all these people saying she was not that type of person to commit this type of crime, well i'll bet that was her thought exactly. I think she was going to use her reputation to abuse the trust of the school system. I think Lyn needs to stop looking at shelly's reputation and start looking at the facts of the matter. Also for Lyn when you say that everyone assumed she was guilty without all the facts being on the table, well would you believe someone who was caught red handed on a video camera? Also that was the only fact truly needed to convict her because she was not even supposed to have access to the filing cabinent, where the money was kept.

People only have one side of the story; so I guess no one is capable of listening to her side. Also, she worked for the school district for 7 years NOT 2 years. I can't stand people who assume someone is guilty until all facts are on the table. WILX did a small story on it and are assuming she is guilty. She is NOT GUILTY.

Well I guess time will tell whether or not she is innocent.

Posted by: Lyn Location: Michigan on May 21, 2008 at 12:55 PM
Yeah, you are confused; you don't know her side of the story; and that's all I can say right now. She has never been a thief and never will be.

They have her on tape, how risky is that? And where does it say she was a theif before this? I'm confused...

Posted by: Lyn Location: Michigan on May 21, 2008 at 12:02 PM
First off, she's never been a thief; and second, it's pretty risky of anyone to put something like this on tv,until the facts are all out on the table. You guys seem to be very sure of yourselves. . . for your sake, I hope you are.
