"Nursing is rigorous work," says registered nurse Angela Craig. She worked in a hospital for more than 10 years and is now an instructor at Lansing Community College's nursing school.

The demands of nursing are both physical and emotional. Nurses have to lift and move heavy patients, spend long hours on their feet, and care for the very ill and dying.

Nursing program director at L.C.C. Mary Roering says these demands are escalating as problems with the nation's healthcare system worsen. She also says new technology, an aging population, and heavier patients contribute to the increasing demands.

But hospital administrators also face challenges like rising health care costs and lower reimbursement from insurance companies. These issues and quality of care of patients and staff may be difficult to balance.
