More than 200,000 jobless workers in Michigan would be eligible for a six-month extension of unemployment benefits under a measure approved by the House on Thursday, but the bill faces an uncertain future.
The extension was part of a funding plan for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. It would provide a 13-week extension of unemployment benefits for people whose payments have expired and give an additional 13 weeks in states with high jobless rates.
"Michigan job hunters will find relief with an additional 26 weeks to find a good-paying job," said Rep. Dale Kildee, D-Flint.
Michigan has had one of the nation's most challenging job markets. Its seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 6.9 percent in April, a slight decrease from the March rate of 7.2 percent. Hurt by job losses in the manufacturing sector and auto industry, an estimated 346,000 people in Michigan lacked a job in April, according to state estimates.
The extension of unemployment benefits was part of an amendment that would increase educational benefits for veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. The funding would come from a tax surcharge on the wealthy and small businesses.
The Senate is expected to consider a similar measure next week, but the bill faces a veto threat from President Bush. The White House has registered its dissatisfaction with the non-war spending, the tax surcharge and any restrictions on the Iraq war.
Michigan officials estimated that the extensions could help between 226,000 and 245,000 unemployed workers in Michigan.
All six Democrats in the Michigan delegation supported the measure, along with Republican Reps. Candice Miller of Macomb County's Harrison Township, Fred Upton of St. Joseph and Joe Knollenberg of Oakland County's Bloomfield Township.
The remaining six Republicans in the state's delegation opposed the amendment. Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Holland, said the troops deserved "unconditional support" and the funding levels should "not require a tax increase on small businesses."
Rep. Tim Walberg, R-Tipton, said the measure would mean a $54 billion tax increase for small business owners and employees and called the vote "nothing more than classic Washington, D.C. politics."
Rep. Sander Levin, D-Royal Oak, said opposition to the extension was "unconscionable."
Levin read a letter from a constituent in Roseville whose husband lost his job as a machinist. The author wrote, "the fear that unemployment benefits may run out is something no family should have to face."
Knollenberg said he supported the extension because the state's "struggling families and unemployed workers need the help."
"Though this is hardly a perfect solution to get us there, getting them the help they need is what's most important," Knollenberg said in a statement.

less jobs comming into mich.why is the question?more jobs go over seas.what does mich have to do to get many jobs here?gas prices go up,causeing more prices to go up.more will find themselves in problems they never thought possible.jobs are harder to find in mich.small cities have none to offer, houses are not selling, nothing is being bought, people don't know what to do.we can't afford to buy gas, food, housing, pay all bills, more are becomming homeless.crime is going up,muggings, breakins, drive offs from the pumps, even farmers are getting robbed of gas ect.an offer of a few food stamps, some medical,or a little help here and there?how long will that help?better than nothing.oil flows at a high price to countries, making some countries rich.not helping thy neighbor,or any world peace this way.just ruining the world.all that help and what we taught other countries to do,just backfired on us.do on to others.not all feel that way do they?we would like our jobs back now.ha,ha.who's stupid?

my 12$ an hour job,use to get me by,now I'm not doing so well.because I feel like I'm making 5$ an hour, that about what I can buy now,as prices have went up so high.all high prices now,due to oil prices, homes are being lost, companies laying off, jobs totally being lost by some.the unemployment is not what many were use to in pay,and when the extended is gone,we can only hope we have new jobs,or are called back to work.no one should run down anyone getting help through social programs.many never thought they'd be there.many do work at very low paying jobs, some just couldn't find any work.many can not even begin to make the pay they use to.many jobs are not secure, things are changeing to fast.many problems people now have was no fault of their own.who asked for oil to go up so high, bringing up gas, bringing up food and so on?no one except thoes making high profits.so up goes oil,as all prices follow.soon all thoes still making it won't be so lucky.not all are getting help needed.

durning the depression, there were alot less people.no unemployment,no social programs, not alot of high paying jobs.the depression brought forth social programs and many other things.people are willing to work.but first the jobs need to be there.unions caused the high pay scales across the usa.many have lost jobs as companies closed, left the states ect.more and more taxes have been asked for by the governments depending who was in office.prices and many things have went up since the last depression.now if we would go into a depression,it would totally destroy the usa.just oil prices and thoes selling it is already taking it's toll.pay cuts have to happen,or some will have no job.jobs were secure, people based how many kids they had, prices they paid for homes, what they went in debt for, ect.by pay cuts, jobs closing, unemployment, high rise in food and gas and many thing going up.people will, have, and continue to loose all they worked for.many will never find that pay again.sad for the USA.

look at the many out of work.on unemployment.with gas prices and food prices and so many things that have went up,many are finding their very low waged jobs and part time work paying for nothing but gas and some food.what about all other things?houseing, utilities, insurances, ect.many counties have every job in them filled.many can not drive all over to look for work either, gas prices.the depression?we can't compare what people did then to now, where jobs are concerned.plus the population was so much less.people were differnt,as wages were.and many modern conviences were few.we can't live like they did back then.now it would be unsanitary, against laws, and it cost so much more to live now.people in many area are willing to work,it's what prices have went up to.how many are going to work,to just put gas in cars?jobs are needed, not all areas have them.if there was no unemployment,or social programs,we would be in a depression.homeless would be all over, also illness, crime so high, ect.

I guess we can be greatful our gov does take alittle better care of people than many countries.not that they are perfect concerning our people.alot could be done that isn't.world greed over the oil thing hurts us,so we pay high gas prices, some countries pay over 8$.many countries people have been starving for yrs.causeing death all the time.we just never thought america would be in this shape it is now.just over what gas prices are causing.how much going on world wide is saying some countries are doing their best to hurt the usa?or other countries?they have oil,oil is needed by all,so they are going to get the price one way or another.power?who will win?what damage can oil countries do to the usa?when all aid is cut off to so many countries from the usa?then what.in the long run the usa has powers unknown.so what will all this come down to?lets hope our gov can continue to give help to most of us,and still keep protecting us from what others put upon us.

if thoes 200,000 out of work had good jobs, think how many taxes would be collected off them.think if all thoes not working, pass unemployment would have jobs.how many would that be?low waged, mim waged, part time waged people?how many are there?just because mich hasn't enough decent paying full time jobs.they took what work they could find.how many are working, from other countries the gov welcomed here,or illegals here working?un taxable ones.how many americans are now drawing food stamps do to lack of work,or prices going up so high, gov had to get them help to eat?we can send aid and food to other countries, not that so many don't need it,but proverty levels and food cards can't have amounts raised here in the usa to help our people?or new jobs started to put our people to work?so many people with so many hardship stories.we don't hear enough.so people have no clue,to the truth.we can't even keep food banks stocked to help more?give more.all over oil greed?a good part of it.we need jobs.

People need to be willing to take a pay cut to work. During the depression, there was no unemployment and people were willing to work.

this all sounds good, but when done with time for the unemployment, how many families will go on totls publis assitance?how many will loose so much they worked for,and how many will not find work.the facts still are there.LACK OF GOOD PAYING JOBS IN MICH.wealthy and big bussiness will pay for this?some one said the rich would get stuck suporting mich.what choice do they have.more people in mich can't pay many taxes out of there low waged jobs,or the no job ones.can't be paid with food cards many have been forced on.all problems still go back to high gas prices, due to world governments greed.and some govs that can't run states right.all thoes striking, all on strike pay,by the unions say so,not all workers.and more will come.not enough jobs?many could join the military, maybe thats what the gov wants.then we can get into more wars.and have more protection in the usa.and more jobs for thoes to old to join.how do we figure out what is going on.how do we surrive.see uncle sam.
