Workers couldn't be fired for their off-the-clock activities, as long as they're legal and not done on the job site, under terms of legislation passed by the state House.
The bills are designed to prevent employers from firing or not hiring workers who may smoke or engage in other legal behavior that some job providers frown upon.
The main bill in the package passed by a 63-45 vote Thursday.
Other bills likely to be considered later Thursday would prevent employers from firing, refusing to hire or discriminating against employees based on their credit history, physical appearance or health.
The bills next will be headed to the Senate.

when something is totally illegal, all over the usa then no company should allow,or any bussiness.when and only when an illness is proved to effect someone in the work force, that can hurt others working with them, should they not hire them people.laws should say what thoes illness are.appearances?modest dress,no smelling, and some things that enter into this is questionable for many reasons.but laws should be there to explain this.all laws should be for all companies all over the usa.like mich gov saying they are trying to stop smoking in bars, restaraunts, some casinoes, all places of employments.not right.is not law for all states.also will cause loss of bussiness for some.and is discrimation.so how can the gov make one set of rules for some, that hurt others.prove discrimation.we can't.so many apply for 1 job now adays.prove GED or reg diplomas gets hired first,or name of collage, one comes from.gay or not gay.illness or none/prove it.

sorry about what other countries do.that the problem.pot is very legal in other countries, and is legally grown there.every thing this country was based on,freedoms of so many things.have slowly been taken away.many who wish to control what their employees do are actually came from other countries.trying to dictate to usa people their beliefs in many ways.in america,do as americans, speak as americans, ect.let us have our rightful freedoms and enjoy them.get rid of illegals and restrict thoes comming here to give americans jobs.jobs are not here that need to be.get them here to help americans.if from another country make sure they understand many things.better yet force all thoes american compainies owned by americans to get their butts back here and pay a decent wage.they've been been made so rich by getting away with cheap labor practices overseas.not fair to us or the ones in other countries.and we wonder what is wrong with the usa.one law, going against another.

what about the ban smoking in many places.found out that wasn't such a good idea, and costly to many.discrimation, freedoms, problems for some bussinesses.could be loss of jobs ect.dictorship rules?now protect smokers,no one should tell a person what they can do off the job,but to prove thats why an employer won't hire.get real.I've been a diabetic for yrs, ounce I became insulin dependant, and put that on an application.never get called and I had all, good qualfications needed.so many looking for work?get real not all get hired so prove the because of health problems, you don't get hired.just like hire gays in government jobs.but laws don't get passed to insure there marriage partner.then prove because your over 45 why you just don't get hired, but look at all the illegals working.and look at all the ones here from other countries working, hoping to get to become americans.the gov lets them come here to be kind.key word.GOVERNMENT.all the laws they make, all this or that.this law proves what?

I think its a good thing. When your employer controls your activities at work and when your off work...then they are out of control.

France has similar rules. They employers over there do not want to hire anyone on a full time basis. The next thing the government will be telling people is that they must hire the first person who fills out an application.
