Epidemiologist for the American Cancer Society Lesley Dufner says there have been advances in all aspects of breast cancer. She says more people are aware and more cancers are being found in the early stages. This has led to more women surviving breast cancer.

There are also new drugs and better treatments that contribute to the declining mortality rate. But it's not all good news. Dufner says over the past few years there has been a decline in the number of women 40 years and older getting a yearly mammogram. This is one of the early detection tools that can lead to survival if cancer is found early.

If you'd like to get involved in awareness events, the "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" walk is coming to Lansing October 15. For more information click on the "Making Strides" link located on the homepage.
