LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- The number of Michigan households getting food stamps has risen 53 percent in the past five years, with one in eight state residents now aided by the nutrition assistance program, authorities say.
In all, 590,600 state households got food stamps in March, the Michigan Department of Human Services says. The households include 1.26 million people, or 12.5 percent of the state's 10.07 million residents.
Nationwide, 27.7 million people received food stamps in January -- or 9.2 percent of the nation's 300 million people.
Michigan's economic distress is more widespread than in past recessions, said Gerry Brisson, vice president for development at Gleaners Food Bank. The group supplies 400 food aid agencies.
"The big difference now is the number of people in suburbs who are feeling it," Brisson told the Detroit Free Press for a story Sunday. "Poverty in (Detroit) has been bad for a long time, but poverty in the suburbs is going up in Livingston, Oakland and Macomb counties."
Mike Remenar lives in the affluent Detroit suburb of Grosse Pointe Woods and said he never thought he would find himself using food stamps to feed his family.
The 60-year-old auto parts designer said he has been unable to find suitable work since losing his job 10 months ago.
"In the past 10 years, I've been laid off a number of times, but never this long," he said. "Especially living in this community, to be in this position is a bit awkward."
The average food stamp allowance is about $100 per person per month.

I would like to know why it is you don't do a story on the different gas prices all over the state of Michigan. For example, in Chelsea gas was 4.09 a gallon on Tuesday, in Jackson it was 3.99 a gallon, in Marshall it was 3.89 a gallon what is going on? Why is the govenor not doing anything about this? This would make a good story. Sincerly, John Smith

the president says we are not in a recession.but look at how the food stamp program is riseing.many house holds are past recession and in a depression.so it only goes by each house hold?instead of usa wide.gas has went up so high, and continues to do so.the usa dollar is worth so little on the market.the wars continue.credit cards go unpaid, banks are stuck with forecloser mortages.more people are loosing homes.no new many things are not selling.jobs are strikeing, lay offs, many on unemployment.many go on food stamps, food banks not doing well.fixed income people really suffering.the gov says we are fine?with the money they make and all invested in oil, they are fine.what about the rest of us?unkept news from the public or what.what does the word proverty mean,if not recession or worse?guess it is who you are.gas prices are effecting food prices.would say so.bush don't have any problems so the rest of us don't either????

well some don't need that get?jay, the red tape, waiting time, paper work, all the checking they do to see if your income meets guide lines, believe me inless some are totally lieing, only some get and the gov knows.many things are taken into consideration.and the food stamp program is federal, don't cost the state anything.the economy of each state is also figured in.the jobs there are in all areas.anyone getting thes sood stamps are considered low income, low waged ect.and believe me the insurances offered don't get good medical attention.basic or emergy only.many services have to be approved before services are given.I rather see food be given to the usa people than sending all we do overseas.that costs us alot.federal programs don't cost mich.9% of taxes go to social programs out of trillions collected in taxes.plus all other money gov gets.we don't know about.we each give a few pennies to the social programs.no big deal.medical costs the states yes.not food stamps.

I just happened to see this on the news tonight and thought, WOW! I have a cousin who has a free ride at Michigan State University, and who's parents are making over $80,000 combined in a year. Since my cousin lives in an apartment, has no job, and being a student may have something to do with it, she is being assisted by the government with food stamps. As a honest tax payer, people like this make me VERY UPSET! Because of this Michigan and the rest of this country should demand that this system is revamped. We can start by having a more in depth application process so the funds for this program are focussed on people who are truely in need of government assistance. I also think that with the increasing gas prices, people may not be able to afford to travel to their place of employment. With this being said, we could seen an even higher percentage of people actually needing food stamps. What are we going to do about this dilema? Please respond.

last 5 yrs?since jenn and her group with her have been in office?that says what some of the problems are with mich.loss of jobs, budget problems, then money found as extra,no jobs comming, but jenn travels to get them and yes the movie thing, the rights for gays in gov office, the new state police building, toxic waste fund gone, drug fighting money cut out.schools getting more problems, teachers laid off, compainies on strike, jobs leaving, laws that get passed that hurt mich.people buying out of state, taxes and more taxes but no money.food banks going without, people going hungry, high gas tax,in top five states we are.how many more will go on food stamps and social programs?we see why don't we.so far I'm doing ok.but not most and it effects children.it's bad enough many depend on food cards, buy no fault of there own,but the gov won't give the raises so people can eat right.last 5 yrs?thanks jenn.food prices, need 200$ per person on food cards.what wrong with the picture.the gov.

Let us not forget, 82% are working. If the state controlled handing out benefits to people that don't need them it wouldn't be as bad. I know there are folks that need these benefits, at the same time I know there are folks receiving that do not need them. It isn't helping our State at all. It isn't much different than the insurance benefits that are handed out, "we only know what people tell us" is what you will be told by the State employees if you ask them about any of this. Maybe if it were policed a little better.

high gas prices have brought the price of food up high.and it continues.food cards don't cover the costs of foods, people still do not eat right on them.the amounts need raised.food banks can't keep up with the demand.all things have went up.people can't continue to keep driveing and pay bills both.to work the price of food into ones budget is impossible for so many.JOBS are needed in mich so bad.many find work but the pay is so low, part time, temp wages, and not nearly what they once had in pay.causing them to sell,or just give back stuff they were in debt for.not giving them good credit at all.many have maxed out there credit cards, and can't pay them off.more homes are being lost, because of high prices, layoffs, job loss all together.mich should have jobs comming here, but not enough or the right type are comming.the gov needs to change things to get jobs here.and many prices need to come down.prices are climbing way to fast.jobs wages can't.so food cards need amounts raised.hungry mich.
