More Harm Than Good?

If you been to the dentist recently, they may have recommended a dental sealant. But those sealants may do more harm than good.

A dental sealant is a material applied to the surface of the teeth to keep bacteria out. Many dentists recommend having the sealant put on in order to prevent cavities.

If someone does have a cavity even if it is the smallest of cavities and cannot be seen, sealing the tooth can lead to tooth decay. Dentists are now using a device called the Diagnadent Laser, which uses light to detect early tooth decay.

Fewer than two percent of dentists use a laser to check for cavities before sealing teeth, but dentists say most people can avoid cavities without sealants by brushing and flossing regularly and visiting the dentist twice a year for a fluoride treatment.
