General Motors Corp. says it will pay up to $200 million to help bring an end to a crippling labor dispute at parts supplier American Axle and Manufacturing Holdings Inc. The automaker said Thursday in a government filing that the payments would go to buy down the wages of striking workers, and for employee buyout and early retirement packages. About 3,600 workers at five American Axle factories have been on strike for more than nine weeks because the company wants to cut their wages and benefits. The strike has crippled GM's production of pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles. American Axle spokeswoman Renee Rogers says negotiations are continuing but no agreement has been reached.

on May 11, 2008 at 09:39 AM would it be in ones interst to take pay cuts,or have no jobs.we ask for what we get in the long run.tom has some good points to what could happen.we look at gas prices world wide.are all countries going to grow corn?for new fuel?are the wars we are in for keeping oil flow going so no one can shut it off by controling water ways?where are car companies headed if no one can buy due to the effect on the economy of people incomes?how long will cars need made at gas prices going so high, and all costs going up due to the gas prices.how long can bussinesses stay open at the prices they must charge?who has who where they want them?what will be the future effects on many things.even pay scales.how do we know that GM hasn't gotten someone else to make parts needed in another country and just buying time for them to get in full operation?then they can tell greedy ones where to get off.sure many did not want to go on strike, unions said yes you will or else.9 wks?20 wks?who really wins?union pay?HA! on May 10, 2008 at 08:40 AM and GM claims losses, but has money to do this?and yet the gov is trying to force new fuel and smaller cars?to many stories or some just can't make up there mind.put people back to work?cut wages, jobs being cut?why don't GM just make all the parts ect they need, and not buy from anyone else.no more car related jobs.no car company should be allowed to buy any parts that go on cars from other countries or it is not truely american made.there should be NO unions envolved.GM should set pay scales.and leave it at that.you work for what is offered or don't have the jobs.as long as pays are fair and all insurances.gee wouldn't that be nice.or maybe all car co should just go to other countries to make cars.could not any of these things just happen?do we really think after making cars for how many years, the car co will just keep giving in.no they won't.there profits and companies will continue no matter what they must do.and these things may not happen right away, but face it,something is up later
