Jurors found Matthew E. Macon guilty in the killing of two women and assault of a third last summer. The jury deliberated for fewer than 2 hours.
He faced five charges. He was found guilty of all five.
1. 1st degree murder of Sandra Eichorn
2. Assault on Linda Jackson
3. Home Invasion of Linda Jackson's home
4. 1st degree murder of Karen Delgado-Yates
5. Torture of Karen Delgado-Yates
Guilty on all five counts, Matthew Macon wiped away tears as he heard the verdict. The man Lansing police say killed five women last summer was found guilty on two counts of first degree murder, torture, home invasion, and assault with the intent to commit murder.
"The jury has spoken and the system is what is it," said defense attorney Mike O'Briant.
Macon was convicted of the murders of Sandra Eichorn and Karen Delgado Yates. Families of his victims embraced afterward as tears flowed from their eyes. Nearly nine months after being arrested, Macon is now on his way to prison.
"Every avenue we looked at went back to him," said Assistant Prosecutor Catherine Emerson. "It seems like the evidence was overwhelming."
Emerson says it was that evidence that allowed the jury to reach a decision so quickly.
"The same pants were worn. His footwear impression was in blood at the Yates place and had blood of Sandra Eichorn on it. The signatures were identical."
Despite that evidence defense attorney Mike O'Briant says he was shocked the jury took less than two hours to deliberate.
"I was surprised at how quickly the jury came back."
He says he will soon talk to his client about whether or not to file for appeal.
