Michigan interstates and interstate bridges rank among the worst in the nation.

That's according to a recent report by The Road Information Program. The non-profit research group is aligned with the road building industry.

The report ranks Michigan dead last nationwide in interstate bridge upkeep, and fifth from the bottom in pavement repair on interstates.

The 'TRIP' analysis of federal data shows 21-percent of Michigan's nearly 1,200 interstate bridges are structurally deficient -- and 13-percent of its 1,200 miles of interstate roads are in poor condition.

The report also says Michigan ranks 47th among the 50 states in its rate of return on federal gas taxes paid by motorists. Those taxes are earmarked for freeway and freeway bridge construction and maintenance.
