They call it a glorified golf cart.
"The motor runs off 18 batteries."
An electric car that could give your wallet a jolt.
"This is a huge, huge money saver for people."
Tom Nicholls has partnered with a manufacturing company to create an all-electric car that costs just 3 cents a mile to run. Compare that to nearly 20 cents a mile with gas and you've got some extra cash.
So far, mechanics have put 500 man hours into converting a 1995 Saturn into an all electric ride. They've already bought a few more older cars, hoping interest will peak.
The car uses no gas, emits no pollution, and it's pretty quiet.
Just a slight hum when you start it up, then silence. But don't get too excited yet...the battery only carries you about 50 miles.
"This is what we categorize as a second car, not a primary car. A second car is very short-distance driving around town."
A trip to the grocery store perhaps or a short commute to work. And when you're all done....
"Pull into your garage, hook it up to your 100 outlet and then the next morning you're ready to go another 50 to 60 miles."
But what about the cost? This model will run anywhere from $15,000 to $20,000, but it can be cheaper if you bring in your own car. Nicholls is already taking orders and hopes his new endeavor will bring residents relief from the pump, and maybe even some new manufacturing jobs to Mid-Michigan.
If you're interested in placing an order or finding out more information, you can call the Nicholls Electric Car Company 517-592-8556.
