Neighbors would like to see the old abandoned gas station at M-100 and I-96 turned into just about anything... anything but an adult book store.

"It's disgusting," Neighbor Richard Whitacre said. "We don't want it in our neighborhood."

The owner of the building applied for a special land use permit from Clinton County to build an adult business. Eagle Township Supervisor David Morris said he's prepared to fight it.

"It brings the wrong kind of people to the area," Morris said. "We don't need it; we don't want it; we'll fight it all the way."

That's why he's started a petition, so far he's gotten 200 signatures of opposition.

"Some people are very, very disturbed," Neighbor Pat Schiable said.

Schiable volunteered her time to take the petition door to door.

"It's very discouraging to know every resident we went to was opposed to this," she said.

Richard Whitacre's has two small children. His house is just a stone's throw away from the proposed site.

"There are houses near by, people drive by there all the time to go to the gas station," Whitacre said.

The owner declined to comment. Clinton County has to approve the proposal before anything moves forward.

If approved, the owner would have to comply with a county ordinance that requires a wall be built around the property so nothing from the inside can be seen from the outside.

"I don't care if they build a wall around it or not, we don't want it here," Whitacre said.

There will be a public hearing on the topic at the Eagle Township hall May 5th.
