Former Detroit City Council President Monica Conyers has been released from prison where she served a sentence for bribery.

Conyers is the wife of Democratic U.S. Rep. John Conyers of Detroit. Officials say she was released Thursday from a federal prison in West Virginia and transferred to a halfway house where she will live for a period before being granted freedom. It is a common step.

Prisons spokesman Edmond Ross says Monica Conyers can work or look for a job while staying at the halfway house. She entered prison in 2010 after pleading guilty in 2009 to taking bribes while on the Detroit council.

She was sentenced to 37 months in prison, but federal inmates typically can trim their time with good behavior.
