Eastern Michigan University Hikes Tuition

Tuition at Eastern Michigan University this fall will be up 13-and-a-half percent from last year's rate.

The tuition increase was among the items in the university's budget approved at Tuesday's board meeting in Ypsilanti.

Full-time students from Michigan will pay $6500 for the 2005-06 school year. That's up from nearly $5800 last year.

The university budget allows the school to issue bonds to cover improvements of campus buildings.

Students would have seen their tuition bills only increase by nine-and-a-half percent, but more money was needed to repay debt created by the bond issue.

Eastern's action leaves Oakland University as the only one of the state's 15 public universities that has not yet set tuition for the upcoming school year.
