Outgoing Gov. John Engler reached a last-minute deal giving state approval for an Indian tribe to open a casino. The casino could open in Flint, Romulus or southern Monroe County.

The deal is with the Sault Sainte Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians. The tribe is one of the owners of Detroit's Greektown Casino.

Engler agreed to the deal to settle a land dispute between the Sault tribe and the Bay Mills Indian Community.

The Sault tribe also could open a casino in Vanderbilt, north of Gaylord in the northern Lower Peninsula. And the Bay Mills tribe could open one in Port Huron under the deal.

Congressional approval is necessary for the casinos to open.
