Mid-Michigan residents are shelling out pennies to help low-income families power up.

The Pennies for Power Program is part of Lansing Board of Water Light's plan to help the less fortunate. It helps low-income customers avoid utility shut-offs.

The program rounds up your monthly bill to the nearest dollar. The money collected provides one-time shut-off protection. Since August of 1998, the program has raised about $142,000 from its more than 4,000 participants.

Pennies for Power helps between 225-250 low-income families a year. Officials say this is the season when customers need their help the most.
