Lansing Firefighters raced to a South Lansing apartment complex after lightning from Thursday night's storm hits a building.
Families in two apartments at the Villas of Woodgate on Edgewood Boulevard were evacuated from their homes around 11 p.m.
Firefighters say a bolt of lightning hit an iron pipe in the attic area. It caused a chain reaction when the water overheated; then flooded two apartments.
Witnesses say they heard the lightning rod hit the pipe, and could smell smoke.
Firefighters had to cut a hole in the side of the apartment as they searched for hot-spots with a light gun.
About three hours later, Lansing Firefighters returned to the Villas of Woodgate.
Flames could be seen coming out of the same building where lightning struck earlier.
Firefighters quickly had the blaze under control.
