Using a Debit Card to Fill Up?

Because of a little known practice referred to as "financial holding," your pre-pay purchase could actually mean double that is temporarily deducted from your debit card account.

Lisa Branch started noticing it this summer when gas prices began climbing. Branch, a single mother who watches every dollar, asked her bank about it and was told nothing could be done because the hold was put on by someone else, perhaps the gas station.

News Tens contacted the gas stations and Visa USA and each pointed the finger at each other.

A hold is legal and is usually taken off the account within two or three business days.
