Gov. Engler is promoting a House bill that would increase the number of charter schools in Detroit.

Engler commented on the bill at an education forum he hosted Tuesday morning.

The House voted last Friday to add 15 charter schools to Detroit over five years. But the Senate had already adjourned. The Senate also needs to approve the bill for it to take effect.

Engler says he would like state lawmakers to return and pass the bill, which he says is critical for students in Detroit.

Engler says he will stay active on education issues after he leaves office Jan. 1.

He is on the board of a new, North Carolina-based group that helps governors form education policies.

He also will be involved with a group he helped found, the Broad Center for Superintendents, which trains urban superintendents.
