Northwest Airlines announced Wednesday it will lay off 1,400 flight attendants by January.
The flight attendants' union says Northwest wants to use more non-union flight attendants on overseas flights to save money.
The union plants to fight the proposal.
The layoffs begin next month, with 480 jobs lost in Detroit.
