DETROIT (AP) -- Detroit police say a pit bull killed a 3-week-old baby after her mother put her car seat on the floor of a house.
Police say the attack happened about 5:45 p.m. Thursday at a home on the city's west side.
A police statement says the 24-year-old mother entered the house and placed the car seat with her daughter on the floor.
Police say the woman "walked away for a moment" and return to see the "pit bull attacking her daughter."
The statement says say the infant was taken to a hospital, where she was declared dead.
Police say they're investigating the dog attack.

This has nothing to do with the breed of the dog. Stop blaming the breed, blame the owner or whoever trains these dogs to fight and be agressive. I have a 60 pound full blood bluenose pit. She is the biggest mush ball, the only time she ever growled was when someone tred coming in my home when noone was here and when my 3 year old daughter gets too close to the neighbors fence when their dog is out. And even then it is a warning for the other dog. Animal control has come to my house and he ended up down on his knees petting my dog. Even with all the other smells on him my pup was perfectly calm and happy as all hall to have him playing with her.

Pitbulls are a reflection of the owners, Pitbulls are nor dangerous And MEAN like all, HUMANS Crop their ears you make them mean, HUMANS FORCE them to fight, HUMANS cage them, HUMANS make them aggressive, And HUMANS train them the way of evil, Don't judge a dog until you know its full story, Nobody knows, the little girl could of pulled its tail or something to set the dog off, or maybe the owner hits the dog and he got set off.. Pitbulls Are sweet, Loving, caring, Protective,And Beautiful dogs.... Everyone needs to understand, Dogs need chances, And love!

I don't know about all pit bulls or some pit bulls or other dogs for that matter. But I love animals and at the same time I would put nothing past any animal. Sometimes even though the owner denies the pet will harm NO ONE can be 100% be certain of what an animal will do!!!!!

Fact: Pit Bulls used to be known as the "nanny dog" because of their gentle, caring ways. They are very perseptive and with a trained, caring owner, they make a wonderful family pet. Fact: Lazy, uncaring, cruel, mean people who own dogs should be muzzled. They can mistreat or neglect any dog enough to make it fearful and aggressive. Fact: Few people report incidences of animal beating or cruelty - including leaving a dog on a chain or in a pen 24-7. IDEA: Stop blaming a breed and have laws that "promote" pet owner training with demonstration of good citizenship AND "encourage" citizen responsibilty to report animal abuse.

People rise to cheer on pit bulls are fools. The people who gravitate toward owning them are poseurs who rarley even like animals. They come from the wrong side of town and they dont pay attention lik ea owner of these things should. You can spew a bunch of bologne to the contrary but those are the facts. You can also get a hundred other breeds that are a better pet so why put others at risk?

Kevin......SERIOUSLY??? I find it ironic that from the despicable crime-filled and downtrodden Jackson you would have the nerve to call out to anyone to "move down south where y'all fit in." Why don't you work on cleaning up your own white-trashy town and stop suggesting others clear out. What an idiot you sound like.

@ Anonymous - you are horribly misinformed and I doubt you've "met" very many Pit Bulls. Every dog has the potential to be a dangerous animal - it's how they're raised and treated that will determine how they interact with people and other animals. As a veterinary technician, I have treated and worked with all breeds of dogs and these dogs don't deserve the reputation they've been given. The death of this baby is tragic and the owner of this animal should have known it wasn't safe to place the child where she did. Was this dog adopted from a shelter where they didn't know its history? Was it an abused or neglected animal? Trained to fight? Beaten? As is usual, the media hype is just that a child was mauled by a Pit Bull - but there are facts there that aren't being brought to light. Please don't judge an entire breed of animal - as is the case with people, there are always a few "bad apples", but it won't spoil the whole bunch.
