Obama & Romney Meet for First Debate

Instant polls show overwhelming majority of viewers think Romney won.

President Barack Obama listens as Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney answers a question during the first presidential debate at the University of Denver, Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2012, in Denver.

President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney have sparred aggressively in their first campaign debate over taxes, deficits and strong steps needed to create jobs in a sputtering national economy.
Obama accused Romney of seeking to "double down" on the same economic policies that created the economic downturn four years ago. Romney responded that "The status quo is not going to cut it."
Romney said he had plans to fix the economy, overhaul the tax code, repeal Obama's health care plan and replace with a better alternative, remake Medicare, pass a substitute for the legislation designed to prevent another financial crash and reduce deficits -- but he provided no new specifics despite Obama's prodding.
Both candidates went over time limits with their responses and wrecked the format of the 90-minute event that was moderated by PBS' Jim Lehrer.
The rivals debate twice more this month.

Al Gore would be the expert. He did invent the internet after all.

Romney wrestled Obama to the ground without even breaking a sweat. Obama was so busy looking up answers for questions his team figured would be asked,he had no answers proving how out of touch he is with the his real job. Al Gore says it was the Colorado altitude Obama had not adjusted to so he was sorta dazed. I think it was global warming.

Romney is a joke and any idiot who votes for him is one that want to pay higher taxes so him and all of his rich but can get out of paying taxes at all. Plus he is hiding things that is why he won't release his taxes because he does not want anyone to know that he is hiding things starting there. Plus that jerk Ryan that is running with him he hides in the woods when things get tough so he is a joke also and no one should waste there time on either one of them. Obama is the only way to go.

@Maureen:Thank you! I guess you and I were the only ones picking up on that. I'm not proud of President Obama's performance, but it isn't even close to over, yet. Romeny proved, once again, to be a blowhard bully who made big claims but no specifics. This 53%er isn't buying his snake oil.

What a liberal slant on what happened at the debate! Romney destroyed Obama in last night's debate. Obama was out of his league, as expected.

Everyone got to see what most of us already knew ... Obama's not so hot without his teleprompter.

I'm a little surprised at the opinion that Romney "won" the debate. He ignored the rules, ignored the commentator, and repeated the same things he has been saying in his campaign over and over, again without giving any specifics about how he would accomplish what he says he will. Yes, he was aggressive. But a debate isn't a boxing match. He failed to provide the specific information voters say they are looking for.

Romney did win. And he has my vote. Only people voting for Obama again are the ones who don't want to work and believe they are entitled to hand outs.
