A Michigan State University student has been diagnosed with a bacterial infection related to meningitis.

The unidentified student has meningococcemia. The student is hospitalized and is expected to make a full recovery.

People who have had contact with the student are receiving preventive treatment.

Meningococcemia can result in both blood stream infection and meningitis, an inflammation of the lining around the brain. Like other meningitis-related ailments, it's spread through close personal contact such as kissing or sharing a water bottle or eating utensils.
