Gas price scare

An accidental rumor fueled panic among mid-Michigan drivers Tuesday, leading to long lines at gas stations.

A new Midland Walmart was testing out a gas sign to see if it worked. A worker put-up a bogus price of $3.03 a gallon. Even though the station isn't even open yet, that price was reported to a radio station. Soon, people were calling and e-mailing each other warning of a looming price hike.

But Mark Griffin, President of the Michigan Petroleum Association said Tuesday, "It's an unfounded rumor....It's not going to $3 today. Maybe someday, but not today."

According to AAA, the average statewide price for a gallon of regular as of Tuesday was $2.33.
