Diane Bannerman donated money at the Mid-Michigan American Red Cross. She says her friend's son lives in Biloxi, Mississippi and they have not heard from him since the hurricane.
As Bannerman waits for word, she and others with no personal connection to the Gulf Coast feel compelled to do what they can. Sarah Clevenger of the Mid-Michigan Red Cross says monetary donations are the best way to help. Their national goal is to raise $130 million; that's the same amount that was needed for the four hurricanes in Florida last year.
Volunteers are also needed. A training course will be held this Saturday. Disaster relief volunteers will need to take this half-day course, complete some other administrative paperwork and be able to make a three-week commitment. Clevenger says the work is not easy.
If you'd like more information, or to make a donation, the Red Cross asks that you call your local chapter at 517-484-7461. Or you can log onto www.midmichiganredcross.org to donate online.
