The pilot has a broken back, but he's alive after bringing his small plane in for a belly landing at the Jackson County Airport.
The 61-year-old pilot says the landing gear would not lock into place when he approached the Jackson County Airport about 10 a.m. Sunday.
The malfunction made it impossible to even manually crank the gear into a locked position.
Pilot Dennis Hoyes picked a spot on the grass alongside the airport for the landing. He set the plane down as softly as he could without the wheels.
The woman passenger in the plane was treated for minor injuries at the hospital.
The pilot was admitted with a broken back.
