Doctors say the measles is almost unheard of in the United States, but anyone who is not immune is at serious risk for the highly contagious disease.

Most at risk are infants and young toddlers under 15 months old who have not received their first dose of the MMR vaccine. The measles usually presents with a high fever followed by a red, raised rash. The virus usually resolves on its own, but complications such as pneumonia, and infection of the heart and brain are possible. One out of every 1,000 people infected with the measles dies.
