Meijer stores are clamping down on improper customer returns.
The suburban Grand Rapids-based retailer has been in business for 71 years. For most of that time, customers have been allowed to return merchandise without sales receipts and get refunds.
But mounting losses to shoplifters and increasing competitive pressures have led to the retailer's decision to impose a tougher return policy. By the end of this month, all 171 Meijer stores will require receipts for returns.
Target and Wal-Mart stores both place 90-day time limits on most returns, and they usually require receipts.
