Downtown Okemos: yes it actually does exist.
It's those half-dozen or so buildings located at the corner of Hamilton and Okemos roads.
While it is small, a group of residents met Wednesday to discuss developing the area into a thriving downtown district.
Meridian Township manager Jerry Richards said the plans would make the area more pedestrian friendly, and hopefully attract new business and residents.
"It's my impression that property owners have some interest in seeing a coordinated effort for improvements," Richards said.
But before any improvements can be made, the township board has to approve the creation of a downtown development authority, or DDA. The DDA would have eight to 12 members, who would oversee the budget for the renovations.
Where would the money come from?
Some possibilities include tax increment financing (TIF), revenue bonds, or a special property tax for properties in the district.
If you live in Meridian Township, you can voice your opinion at a public hearing September 6.
