Tony Benavides was unanimously voted Lansing City Council President. But, due to Lansing Mayor, David Hollister’s new position as a cabinet member for Gov. Jennifer Granholm, Benavides comes one step closer to the title of mayor.

Hollister resigned as Lansing’s mayor, but has yet to officially deliver his resignation to City Hall.

Once the state senate confirms him to his cabinet position the job of Lansing’s mayor will finally be vacant.

City laws say the council president would then move into the mayor’s slot.

Benavides says he would be the first mayor of “Hispanic heritage” if that were to occur.
