The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says the 2002 firearms deer season was the third safest on record.
The DNR reports on firearm fatality and 17 non-fatal injures occurred during the 16-day season.
The lone gun victim was a 29-year-old Lawrence, Michigan man shot on private property on Nov. 15, the first day of the firearms season.
The DNR says the safest season on record was in 2001 when one fatality and 14 non-fatal injures occurred. The second safest was in 1996 when there was one fatality and 15 non-fatal injuries.
