Consumers Energy Wants to Raise Gas Rates

Consumers Energy's residential customers could soon see their natural gas rates go up an average $5 a month.

That's what would happen if the Michigan Public Service Commission signs off on the utility's request for $132 million in rate relief.

The Jackson-based utility filed the request Friday.

A spokesman for Consumers Energy said the utility needs to increase rates to offset higher natural gas prices, increasing health care and pension costs and additional customers.

If approved, the increase would come on top of a $1.50 increase the commission approved last fall for two years.
