Michigan Attorney General Jennifer Granholm has put stores to her office's annual test.

Representatives from the AG's office visited 12 stores in Ingham, Eaton, Kent and Wayne counties. The stores surveyed were JC Penny, Marshall Field's, Target, Mervyn's and Sears.

Items selected by the secret shoppers were run past the stores register scanners. The average error rate was 3.2 percent, the same as last year's. However, that was significantly lower than the 16.9 percent error rate in 2000.

Granholm says the state's efforts to make sure scanners are accurate are paying off.
