The competition kicked off today and will go until July 9. Firefighters are the reigning champions and they will be working to keep that title. Both firefighters and police will be recruiting people within their ranks and within the community to donate blood.
Sharon Jaksa, CEO of the Great Lakes Region Blood Services, says no matter who wins or loses, everyone is a winner because the community will benefit at a time of critical need. She says summertime brings fewer donors, but greater demand due to more accidents.
The goal is to collect 900 units of blood and save 2,700 lives. If you'd like to donate and cast a vote for either the police or the fire departments, call 1-800-give-life or visit www.givelife.org.
