Around 3 a.m., Sunday, many residents near the area of Jenison and Maple Streets woke to the sound of what they thought were fireworks. Tragically, they were not.
"At approximately 3:03 in the morning, or 911 center received a call of shots fired near a house party," said Captain Mike Yankowski of Lansing Police.
Police say, they found two gunshot victims at a house on the 1000 block of Jenison Street and transferred both to the hospital where one 16-year-old Lavon Wilson, died at 3:41 a.m. Another victim, a 24-year-old male had non-life threatening injuries.
"We're not releasing the identities of the two victims at this time," said Yankowski. "We do plan on having an autopsy performed in the next 24 to 48 hours."
Early investigations indicate that the gunshots came from a SUV-type vehicle and were fired towards people standing outside the house. According to police, the accused vehicle quickly fled the scene, leaving many residents shaken.
"It's just a good neighborhood," said Brother Monta, who has lived in the area his entire life. "I mean we've had violence, but I don't feel unsafe in walking up and down the street. I'm just sad another young man lost his life."
Police say the investigation is ongoing and to call them at 483-4600, call Crime Stoppers at 483-STOP or leave a message with Detective Cathy Farrell at (517) 483-6853. Anonymous text messages can also be left at 847411, but messages must begin with LPD517.
