Michigan Lawmakers Debate Prison Changes

An Upper Peninsula prison would be closed under a $1.8 billion budget approved Thursday.

A state Senate subcommittee voted along party lines to send the budget to the Senate Appropriations Committee. Republicans voted for it and Democrats opposed it.

Under the bill, the minimum-security Newberry Correctional Facility and Camp Manistique would be closed. They have a combined 1100 beds and 345 full-time jobs.

But the proposal to close the Newberry prison drew criticism from Democrats. Governor Jennifer Granholm is proposing the closure of a youth prison in Northern Michigan instead.
