East Lansing Luxury Loft Project Collapses

The St. Anne Luxury Lofts in the heart of downtown East Lansing suffered a set back Monday afternoon.

According to East Lansing Director of Code Enforcement Howard Asch, a section of the fourth floor was overloaded with materials and collapsed down to the third floor. The force and weight of that collapse caused a chain reaction down to the first.

Asch tells News 10 the construction staff noticed the fourth floor was under too much pressure. Though they couldn't remove the materials in time, they got everyone safely out of the way.

Asch said about a quarter of each floor building is lying in the first floor facing Albert Street. He said it's essentially the size of what would be one of the living rooms in the lofts.

There was no major damage to the steel structure, but engineers will evaluate it in case the collapse caused anything to shift. They might have to remove some wiring and plumbing near where the collapse occurred.

Asch said this will set back construction significantly.
