Kylene Volz is 7.5 months pregnant with her first child, and in May she will join the nearly 8 percent of women in the United States who use a midwife to have a natural child birth.
"My husband and i made that decision along time ago that that was the route we were going to take, because it's the normal process," Volz said.
And that's why other Kylene and other moms-to-be gathered to watch The Business Of Being Born, it's a documentary that takes a critical look at traditional hospital childbirth and offers shocking statistics about the maternity care system in the U.S.
Childbirth experts want women to know that they have more options than they think.
" A lot of people think that it is a medical necessity to be in the hospital, and really 90 percent of births actually are fine and completely normal," said Heather Paris, a childbirth educator
"It's a different idea that women would choose to give birth without drugs," said Clarice Winkler, a certified nurse midwife.
And they want mothers in Mid-Michigan to get used to that idea, that's why they're bringing natural child birth awareness to Lansing, a place they say alternative childbirth options are few and far between.
"In Lansing we felt that it was particularly important because there seems to be so few options for women," Winkler said.
And moms-to-be like Kylene hope that changes.
"This is what normal birth is about, as little intervention as possible and certainly educating more and more people about it," Volz said.
